Oh, boy

So: Ted Cruz will announce that Carly Fiorina will be his running-mate if he somehow or other wins the Republican nomination.

Like … maybe he’ll win the nomination if he picks a woman.

This has the feel of gratuitous pandering, and is too reminiscent of John McCain’s choice of the flamingly unqualified Sarah Palin. I predict: Fail.

Early on, I liked Fiorina. What’s not to like about somebody who can face down The Donald and draw blood while all the gentlemen on the stage stand by with their eyes bulging out? I just wish she had brains to match that titanium backbone; alas, she blew any hope of my vote when she started fantasizing about things she didn’t actually see in those doctored anti-abortion videos.

Another thing: How does a blinking-neon Dominionist like Ted Cruz ever grant, or propose to grant, power to a woman? This is going to cost him some of his natural base, I predict.

The Republicans just get more ridiculous, more transparent, more obviously cynical, with every passing day. Just now, I can’t for the life of me imagine any option for a sane adult but to clip a clothespin on his nose and vote for Hilary.

Anticipating persecution

Russell Moore approvingly retweets this:

Well. Since Russell Moore is the head of the Southern Baptist’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, and led the rush to deny that a Trump supporter could be a r-e-e-e-a-l evangelical, one wonders what memorable thing Moore had to say — No?

It seems he so impressed Mr. Cunningham when leading a group of seminarians to the prison in which, according to tradition, Paul was kept before his execution. (Nobody actually knows where Paul was imprisoned.)

The hole lead straight down into a tiny dungeon cell that was dark, damp, and cold. A cell where Paul probably penned his last letter to his disciple Timothy, just moments before his death.

And here we were, some 2,000 years later, gathered around Dr. Moore as he began to read some of those words Paul wrote to Timothy all those years ago.

He read (2 Timothy 2:9),

“for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!”

In that moment those words came alive like never before.

Because the Roman Empire has collapsed, but people still read Paul, et cetera, et cetera.

How can you not laugh? After all …

  • 2 Timothy is almost universally thought by Biblical scholars to be a forgery and not written by Paul.

Most modern critical scholars argue that 2 Timothy was not written by Paul but by an anonymous follower, after Paul’s death in the First Century.[1][2]

The language and ideas of this epistle are notably different from the other two Pastoral letters yet similar to the later Pauline letters, especially the ones he wrote in captivity. This has led some scholars to conclude that the author of 2 Timothy is a different person from 1 Timothy and Titus.

  • This is precisely the same thought offered by Shelley, in Ozymandias.

And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away”.

There is nothing very original going on here.

  • And, of course, since Christianity rests upon a well-documented raft of nonsense, that is the empire which is collapsing.

Nor is our earnest scholar done.

Today, we face a similar age that screams in our ears the same devilish lie that we are losing right now, and will lose in the end. But take a lesson from that prison cell in Rome, things are not always as the appear right now.

Yes, it may be true that in days ahead we may also find ourselves behind bars for the gospel we preach. But if we are, those bars will no more contain our message than they did Paul’s.

These people live in an enclosed, self-sustaining fantasy world; there is no hope of reasoning with them, or drawing them into the communion of goodwill that has enabled the survival of humanity in spite of their degrading metaphysics and appalling superstitions. They must be defeated.

“keep our state straight”

So help me, you can’t make up how mean-spirited and ignorant politics are here in North Carolina. Every Boss Hogg- or Willie Stark-like stereotype you’ve even encountered is untrue because it is chaste; the truth is uglier, more rotten, more cynical.

The latest? The Godly were summoned to the state capital yesterday to grunt and bleat their support for HB-2, and treated to this imperishable urging from the GOP nominee for Attorney General:

State Sen. Buck Newton urged the crowd to “tell your friends and family who had to work today what this is all about and how hard we must fight to keep our state straight.”

Honestly, I marvel some days. The Republicans aren’t even part of the decent, educated world any more.

Repealing HB-2

If you can bear it, watch the speakers at a rally held just today in downtown Raleigh in support of the odious HB-2.

Lots of talk about standing firm for the Lord, the way God made people, dimestore theology, Bible quoting, et cetera, et cetera. Anybody who thinks this is about anything but Pious malice for everybody who is different is out of his mind; that is all this ridiculous law, and cost, have ever been about. Recall Barry Goldwater’s famous remark:

On religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God’s name on one’s behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent.

These morons will never compromise, they will never seek common ground; they have the sickness, and they have it bad.

If the spreading boycott, and loss of convention business, and abandoned plans to move here continue to grow … they will pat themselves on the back, take pride in the mighty work they are doing for Our Invisible Friend, and fall asleep at night wondering just how much treasure has been set aside for them in Heaven.

You cannot reason with these people; reason is the tool of the wicked. They must be defeated.

Feel the love-love-love department, ctd

Please. Caitlyn Jenner is doubtless in far more danger entering a Mens Room than my wife is if she and Caitlyn Jenner should visit the Ladies Room at the same time. But, then, Anita Staver is the wife of Matt Staver, so apparently it’s a totally reality-free marriage.
