Hey! Trump supporters! What the F*** is wrong with you? My best guess: You have cotton candy where you ought to have brains, silly-putty where you ought to have character — and you’re breathtakingly ignorant of your own country’s history and ideals.

And notice this: 81% of evangelicals voted for Trump in 2016, and many of them told pollsters then that they weren’t for Trump so much as opposed to Hilary Clinton. This round Trump’s evangelical support declined 5%, to 76% — but that 76% is enthusiastic for Trump.

While white evangelicals’ support for President Donald Trump is close to the strong backing he enjoyed in 2016, voters’ motivations have shifted during his first term at the White House.

This year, a majority are excited to get behind Trump, rather than being primarily motivated by a distaste for his opponent. Among white evangelical Trump supporters, most characterize their vote in 2020 as “for Trump” (57%) and not “against Joe Biden” (20%), according to new Pew Research Center survey breakouts provided to CT.

Never forget that, and face the truth about evangelicals: Those incandescent hypocrites have got sewage where they ought to have character.

I’ve wondered often these past 4-years, “Did Trump’s supporters suppose they were voting for a plainspoken, give-em-hell Harry Truman-like figure? Are they truly lunatic racists? Do the Evangelicals not know that they have squandered, forever, whatever scintilla of moral credibility they might once have had?” And I still don’t know what I think about all that.

No matter. Trump’s election was a national disgrace, and 4-years later it has become a national disaster. It’s down to We, the People now; America’s built-in check-and-balances have failed egregiously and the defense of the country is in our hands.

There are a lot of severely screwed-up people in the evangelical subculture — How could it be otherwise, really, given their beliefs? — and I have no difficulty believing any of this.

When Jerry Falwell Jr. and his wife Becki strolled around the Lynchburg, Va., campus of Liberty University, the evangelical school which Falwell led as president, they would play a secret game called “Would you rather.”

The middle-aged couple would point to students, men and women, and imagine what it would be like to have sex with them, according to a former student who said Becki told him about the game.

The former student, a member of a band with the Falwells’ son Trey, has said that Becki initiated oral sex with him while he stayed overnight at the Falwell home, following other attempts to seduce him.

And on and on. Lets all get over the idea that the Pious are special, better, more trustworthy, more honorable; it isn’t true.

This is so egregious, so incandescent, so reminiscent of the flagrant lies of totalitarian states like the Soviet Union and North Korea, that it’s revealing: these people don’t care that we know they’re nothing but a pack of corrupt frauds. And that probably means that, even if we vote him out on November 3rd, We, the People, have got a fight on our hands.

It seems that roughly 35,000 devout Christians, from all over the country, decided to assemble on the National Mall Sunday evening.

As this miserable pandemic drags on, and churches and political rallies are revealed again and again to be the locus of outbreaks, I’ve decided that Friedrich Nietzsche was right: Pity is not a virtue. If these people want to do stupid things and kill themselves, then hand ’em a Darwin Award and move along; that’s just natural selection at work. Better to protect yourself from morons than try to protect morons from themselves.
