Dismal theology-related tweet for the day

The Babylon Bee is a satire site, and they point to the great defect in Christian thought while trying to satirize those upbeat, over-enthusiastic preachers who can’t get to the end of a sentence without using ‘awesome:’ If you don’t believe in Original Sin, if you don’t believe you’re an utterly worthless piece of dung and the bald fact of your putrid existence offends the cosmos itself, Christianity doesn’t have anything on offer. Except the companionship of other insecure people, I mean.

Basically, the Bee is complaining that preachers don’t spend enough time telling people that they’re no damn good.

There is simply no way to escape the bottom line: Christianity is predatory and exploits the insecure.

Totally deranged quote for the day

Dear Congress,

It must be painfully obvious to all of you by now that Donald Trump is corrupt, mentally unstable, and an existential threat to the survival of the country itself. Do your duty. Remove him from office.

I thought it was obvious long before the election that Donald Trump must never occupy the presidency. I wondered then, and I wonder still, about the intelligence and character of his supporters. He lies practically every time he opens his mouth, he is overtly hostile to the First Amendment protections of the press and speech, he is playing ‘chicken’ with another deranged authoritarian who controls nuclear weapons, and there is a compelling prima facie case that he has committed treason. Acting to remove him from office would not be, as some will doubtless contend, the politicization of policy differences, but merely the satisfaction of your sworn duty to protect the Constitution.

I repeat: Duty. You are officers of the government, and it is your sworn duty to protect the government and its Constitution. I don’t care if your district is comprised of evangelicals and other sundry nutjobs and acting to remove Trump from office means you will be looking for some other line of work next November. Your country needs you and your duty is plain: Trump must be removed from office.

For my part, the willingness to publicly say The Donald is unfit for office and publicly commit to removing him from office is the issue; I will work for those who will do that, and I will work against those who won’t. I have never in my life been a single-issue voter; I have often held my nose and voted for candidates I couldn’t feel enthusiastic about. But we are careering toward an unprecedented Constitutional crisis, and the gross unfitness of Donald Trump for public office, in combination with the myriad threats he poses to the country itself, overwhelms everything else: Donald Trump is the issue, and on Election Day I am voting exclusively for candidates who publicly promise to act to protect the country from him. Settled.

Dismal theology-related tweet of the day

Well … we’ve all heard some variation of this before. “If pleasing Jesus does not come ahead of your children, then YOU’RE NOT THE PARENT YOU SHOULD BE.” And, “If pleasing Jesus is not more important to you than your spouse, then YOU’RE NOT THE WIFE/HUSBAND YOU SHOULD BE.” And, “If your career is more important to you than serving Our Invisible Friend, THEN YOU’RE NOT A REAL CHRISTIAN.”

Et cetera, et cetera.

As I’ve said many times, most people have too much sense and decency to be good Christians; it’s the ones who don’t that you have to watch out for. And, of course, the cynical cult-leaders they listen to.
