Dismal theology-related quote for the day

Number of Labor Day sermons I have in my sermon files: Maybe a couple. Never thought it was a Sunday worth a topical sermon.

William Thornton, SBC Voices

It was the unions that built the middle class and generated the wealth these guys live on; even if they serve a farm community with no radical-pinko-commies within 100-miles, they have benefited from the unions. I swear: These Holy Men are so ignorant about some things that it’s downright painful.

The case for the First Amendment

Donald Trump.

Right. News people get out of bed in the morning wondering, “What kind of shit would I like to make up about Donald Trump today?, because that will harm the economy and injure my country.”

Yes, I know: There are people so stupid, so inexhaustibly malicious, that they believe the media are just as pathetic and dishonest as themselves; Donald Trump is one of them. In psychology it’s called ‘projection.’ But generally … No. The media work hard to get it right, feel shame when they have something wrong, and make corrections promptly. The problem is the subject; Trump is sewage all the way down and I, for one, am grateful that the Founders had the wisdom to protect the press.

Here comes Dorian

As is so often the case, it appears we’re going to be right on the border between heavy rain and a serious problem. I guess I’d better pickup another chain for the saw, and blade oil, et cetera, et cetera, just in case.

The image below, by the way, is served by NOAA and will be regularly updated.

Tasteless marketing tweet of the day

And, of course, the Evangelical Right, which Tony Perkins exemplifies, is the most disruptive, destructive, and dishonest faction in American life.

Loonies on Parade

No. There was no Eden, there was no Adam and Eve, and there was no Fall; that story is make-believe.

Meantime, down in south Florida, observant Jews are wondering if it would be allright if — with a hurricane coming, and all — they worked on the Sabbath to flee or protect their property from Dorian.

And in South Florida, many Jewish families were trying to determine if they were allowed to work on boarding up their house or prepare to leave it over the Sabbath, which began at 7:25 Friday night. In Hollywood, Fla., Rabbi Gideon Goldenholz of Temple Sinai of Hollywood said they could.

“A hurricane is life-threatening,” he said, “so you have to do everything you can.”

I can remember when I was a kid and my mother would complain about me not having enough sense to come in out of the rain. Perhaps I had a religious sensibility, then, that I have since lost.
