For as long as I can remember, the Mackinac Bridge has closed on Labor Day and allowed pedestrian traffic — and that’s the right thing to do. From the concrete placed into the gigantic caissons from barges, to the braiding of the cables that hold the deck aloft, the bridge was built by tradespeople; it is the quintessential example of the successful marriage of engineering brilliance and industrial brawn.
