The heritage that Trump is bragging-up is that Richmond, Virginia was the capital of the Confederacy. Richmond is proud of that, too; just take a ride down Monument Avenue.
I’ve discussed the monument flap in the past; I feel squeamish about whitewashing history and removing the statues, but also that celebrating the Confederacy requires a misshapen character. The statues should be turned into the centerpieces of, basically, open-air museum exhibits rebuking that shameful history.
But nobody should feel any confusion on this point: Trump is dog-whistling the human sewage who resent that regular white folk can no longer own a couple of slaves (preferably breeding stock), and all he deserves is loathing and contempt.
