Pious stupidity

A Michigan woman has died following a decision to carry her pregnancy to term rather than seek treatment for brain cancer.

Carrie DeKlyen, 37, chose to forgo clinical trials and chemotherapy to treat brain cancer, since it would have meant ending her pregnancy. Feeding and breathing tubes were removed on Thursday, one day after daughter Life Lynn was born. Carrie had been in a coma since July.

“We’re pro-life,” he [Ms. DeKlyen’s husband] told the Detroit Free Press. “Under no circumstance do we believe you should take a child’s life. She sacrificed her life for the child.”

Granted: The treatment for brain cancer may not have been effective, and she may have died anyway. But before ooh-ing and ahh-ing about she and her husband’s godliness, spare a thought for the people left behind and the lives she and her husband stupidly chose to make harder; their six children have no mother.

I swear, religion soils everything it touches.
