The relentless and painful crudities, the serial lies, the gratuitous insults of vastly more accomplished people, the blinding ignorance, the strange lack of curiosity, the preening Nazi-sympathizers and resolutely ignorant evangelicals who flocked to him, the plain corruption … we knew clearly who Donald Trump is well before the election and, to the abiding credit of the American people, a decisive majority rejected him. It is only a Constitutional oddity, the Electoral College, which put him in office.
We now have exactly what every thinking adult knew we would have — a circus of deceptions and chaos and mismanagement. Our to-do list:
-
Donald Trump must be removed from office.
-
The Constitution must be amended to eliminate the danger, now manifest, posed by the Electoral College.
Trump will not go easily. Whether he is removed by his Cabinet or a Congressionally-appointed committee according to the provisions of the 25th-Amendment, or impeached by the House and convicted in the Senate, it is (too) easy to imagine him trying to rally a mob to his defense and perpetuation in office.
We are in for a wrenching time in our national life.
