Sheesh. In Detroit, in the late 1960s, it was possible to see poorly whitewashed-over signs reading “Negro entrance” on the side of stores; I passed one every day for years as I rode a bus to high school in the city’s downtown.

And here in the south the racism and de facto segregation are even more overt.
