Back in the ol’ hometown, ctd

Up until the time of the awful shootings in Charleston, I was uneasily willing to accept that somebody might fly the Confederate battle flag as an expression of sympathy for the largely-abandoned doctrine of states rights, or an expression of (misguided) love for the so-called culture of the south. Since then, however, nobody can fail to understand that its display is neither more nor less than a defiant expression of plain-vanilla racism; that is what that terrible event redefined it as.
