Conversion therapy harms transgenders

I dislike citing sources that are paywalled, because there is no opportunity for site visitors to go read the original for themselves. But this brief piece in Science seems like a worthwhile exception:

A large, first-of-its-kind study has found that transgender people who reported receiving so-called conversion therapy were more than twice as likely to report having attempted suicide as peers who had spoken to other kinds of therapists about their gender identity. For those younger than 10 when they underwent attempts to align their gender identity with their sex assigned at birth, the risk of attempted suicide was more than four times as great.

The difficulty arises out of the assumption that plumbing and sexuality are the same thing, and that there must be a psychological problem when they aren’t in sync. No. Sexual identity and plumbing are different things, hard-coded before birth and, occasionally and unhappily, they’re mismatched. It isn’t wickedness, it’s biology — and just one more thing that the Inerrant Bible is wrong about.
