I know firsthand the professionalism of the men and women of the F.B.I. The aspersions cast upon them by the president and my longtime friend, Attorney General William P. Barr, are troubling in the extreme. Calling F.B.I. professionals “scum,” as the president did, is a slur against people who risk their lives to keep us safe. Mr. Barr’s charges of bias within the F.B.I., made without providing any evidence and in direct dispute of the findings of the nonpartisan inspector general, risk inflicting enduring damage on this critically important institution.

The country can ill afford to have a chief law enforcement officer dispute the Justice Department’s own independent inspector general’s report and claim that an F.B.I. investigation was based on “a completely bogus narrative.” In fact, the report conclusively found that the evidence to initiate the Russia investigation was unassailable. There were more than 100 contacts between members of the Trump campaign and Russian agents during the 2016 campaign, and Russian efforts to undermine our democracy continue to this day. I’m glad the F.B.I. took the threat seriously. It is important, Mr. Wray said last week, that the inspector general found that “the investigation was opened with appropriate predication and authorization.”

William Webster is a former director of both the FBI and the CIA and deserves our attention, even if the First Felon would probably dismiss him as a senile has-been.

You can tell a FOX-viewing poet

SBC Voices publishes a brief account of the news, clearly written by a FOX-viewing poet.

While out in his [Adam Schiff’s] district,
The homeless still slept
In what ‘ere they could find
Cause Schiff was inept.
While Grandma needs medicine,
The Democrats have been
Chasing round rumors
Of Trump’s grievous sin.

Two thoughts:

  • You can always tell when somebody is fueled by FOX News’ diet of anger and lies.

  • Anybody who thinks these lies aren’t being repeated from Southern Baptist pulpits is naive and an idiot. This is a good example of why the privileged tax status of churches must be revoked.

Trump on trial

The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

WASHINGTON– Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday that he will be in “total coordination with the White House counsel” as the impeachment into President Donald Trump presses forward.

During an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, the Majority Leader said that “everything” he does “during this, I’m coordinating with the White House counsel. There will be no difference between the president’s position and our position as to how to handle this, to the extent that we can.”

“We don’t have the kind of ball control on this that a typical issue, for example, comes over from the House, if I don’t like it, we don’t take it up,” McConnell stated about an impeachment trial. “We have no choice but to take it up, but we’ll be working through this process, hopefully in a fairly short period of time, in total coordination with White House counsel’s office and the people who are representing the President in the well of the Senate.”

So Mitch McConnell has publicly promised that he will not permit a fair trial in the Senate?

What, then, is the role of the Chief Justice? And why on earth isn’t the American public howling for McConnell’s scalp?

It’s on, now

The House Judiciary Committee has voted support for both of the proposed articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. The articles now go to the entire House for consideration. If the House affirms the articles there will be a trial in the Senate; if not, impeachment fails.

So it isn’t quite correct to say that Trump has been impeached; that becomes a reality next week. But the full House almost certainly will approve the articles.

Good. Trump is grossly unfit for office and a national embarrassment.

Dismal theology-related quote for the day

I was raised in a Southern Baptist church and I have been taught to believe, and it makes a lot of sense to me, that God created all these different races and if he had wanted them all commingled into one race, he would have done it himself. Why did he create all these races, if he didn’t mean for us to be separated by race?

It makes a good example of religion as an engine of evil, though.
