Quote for the day

Could anything turn the declining curve of religion around? Yes, unfortunately. A global plague, a world war fought over water or oil, the collapse of the internet and power grid, or some as yet unimagined catastrophe could throw the remaining population into ignorance, misery, and fear, which is the soil in which religion flourishes best. And then we’d have to start rebuilding civilization all over again.

The Will to Power

Book Two: A Criticism of the Highest Values That Have Prevailed Hitherto
V: Concerning the Slander of the so-called Evil Qualities

§389   Let us consider how dearly a moral canon such as this (“an ideal”) makes us pay. (Its enemies are — well? The “egoists”).

The melancholy astuteness of self-abasement in Europe (Pascal, La Rochefoucauld) inner enfeeblement, discouragement and self-vexation of the non-herd animals —

The perpetual process of laying stress upon mediocre qualities as being the most valuable (modesty in rank and file, the creature who is an instrument).

Pangs of conscience associated with all that is self-glorifying and original:

thus follows the unhappiness, the gloominess of the world, from the standpoint of stronger and better-constituted men!

Herd consciousness and timorousness transferred to philosophy and religion.

Let us leave the psychological impossibility of a purely unselfish action out of consideration!

FBI foils X-ray gun killer

Well. Here’s a guy who was trying to build an X-ray gun that he would use to remotely kill Muslims.

Court hears how man was building an X-ray gun to kill all Muslims from the back of his van to ‘help Jews get rid of their enemies’

  • Secret audio was played in a New York court Tuesday in which Glendon Crawford, 49, discussed technical aspects of his Muslim-killing ray gun

  • Crawford first aroused suspicion when in 2012 he approached staff at a Schenectady synagogue with a plan to ‘help Jews get rid of their enemies’

  • The alleged plot involved remotely firing a death ray that would kill victims with radiation poisoning weeks later, a plot officials say may have worked

Inexplicably honest theology tweet for the day

Christian theology is false, but this observation about Christian theology is true. The entire rickety edifice relies on your acceptance of the claim that you were born intrinsically, innately, irreparably foul, depraved, and unfit to live — that is Christianity’s indispensable metaphysical claim. If you don’t accept that, Christianity has nothing on offer.

It is, indeed, meant to break you down and flatten you; that is all it has ever been about.
