But not without controversy.

Never mind that the Southern Baptist reading of Scripture justified slavery and gratuitously destroyed millions of lives.

Oh, right — a predominantly black denomination would probably leap at the chance to merge with their former overseers.

Seriously, it is time for educated adults to be done with religion, and to confront its stupidities every time they make an appearance.
Apparently, Omar Mateen was a regular visitor to Pulse.
The gunman who attacked a Florida LGBT nightclub had attended the club before the attack and had used a gay dating and chat app, witnesses said.
Kevin West, a regular at Pulse nightclub, said Omar Mateen messaged him on and off for a year before the shooting using the gay chat and dating app Jack’d.

Well. This adds a layer to the story, don’t you think? If this was a guy who couldn’t muster-up the nerve to come out, it turns the massacre into a convoluted story about trying to kill the sin he desperately wanted but couldn’t have. “Get thee behind me, Satan”, and all that. Assuming this angle pans out, he doesn’t look malevolent so much as a weakling crushed by the fist of ignorant superstitions.
