The spider that ate Munising

As longtime readers know, I attended college at Michigan Tech, an engineering school located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It’s a beautiful place, and there are a number of webcams up there that I visit regularly.

A few mornings ago I visited the webcam at the dock for the boat tours along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, on the south side of Lake Superior, near Munising — and caught this striking image.

OK, never mind. I guess you have to have lived there.

Quote for the day

[ … ]

Whereas tyrannical and authoritarian governments and leaders throughout history have sought to undermine, censor, suppress, and control the press to advance their undemocratic goals and actions; and

Whereas the United States, including the long-held commitment to and constitutional protection of the free press in the United States, has stood as a shining example of democracy, self-government, and freedom for the world to emulate: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved that …

  1. The Senate affirms that the press is not the enemy of the people

United States Senate

OK, not exactly brave in view of all the other misbehaviors toward which the Senate has contentedly turned a blind eye, but a nice rebuke that Trump will surely notice on the day that newspapers nationwide are condemning Trump’s relentless abuse of the press.

Tweet-storm of the day

What does this mean?

“Now the Globe is in COLLUSION with other papers on free press. PROVE IT!”

Well, the Boston Globe did — publicly — orchestrate nationwide editorials today defending the Buffoon-in-Chief’s bete noire, a free press, so I guess he is denouncing that. But what on earth can “PROVE IT!” possibly mean?

Seriously: It is time to stop pretending that Trump is anything but a deeply anti-American madman, hostile to our foundational ideals, and an existential threat to the country itself.

Do your duty, Congress.

Recycled headline of the day

How often have we seen this headline, or something depressingly similar?

Catholic Priests Abused 1,000 Children in Pennsylvania, Report Says

Bishops and other leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Pennsylvania covered up child sexual abuse by more than 300 priests over a period of 70 years, persuading victims not to report the abuse and law enforcement not to investigate it, according to a searing report issued by a grand jury on Tuesday.

Church activists who are still believers, whether Catholic or Protestant, all seem to believe that the problem is procedural, that the way to eliminate the problem is to institute stronger protections for children, to end the celibacy requirement for priests, on and on.

No. The problem inheres in Christian teaching itself, in its innate degradation of man as man, its insistence that man in fundamentally evil and deserving of death and eternal punishment; you cannot — cannot — drum that into some defenseless kid’s head day after day, year after year, and expect him to grow up with a wholesome attitude toward sex when reproduction is the imperative life instinct.
