Nor, in fact, do most pastors want them to; they&#8217;d prefer their flock read clowns like Josh McDowell and gen-u-ine pseudo-historian David Barton.  John Piper surely pays attention, however, so his claim has no more dignity than the lie of a plaid-suited carnival barker.<\/p>\n<p>Probably the best single-volume introduction to the difficulties of the traditional Christian narrative is John Spong&#8217;s <i><a href=\"https:\/\/affiliates.abebooks.com\/c\/208155\/77416\/2029?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.abebooks.com%2Fservlet%2FSearchResults%3Fsts%3Dt%26cm_sp%3DSearchF-_-home-_-Results%26an%3Dspong%26tn%3Drescuing%2Bthe%2Bbible%26kn%3D%26isbn%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rescuing the Bible From Fundamentalism<\/a><\/i>.  Alternatively, read Bart Ehrman&#8217;s <i><a href=\"https:\/\/affiliates.abebooks.com\/c\/208155\/77416\/2029?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.abebooks.com%2Fservlet%2FSearchResults%3Fsts%3Dt%26cm_sp%3DSearchF-_-home-_-Results%26an%3Dehrman%26tn%3Dlost%2Bchristianities%26kn%3D%26isbn%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lost Christianities<\/a><\/i>.  Both books offer a good survey of what <i>bona fide<\/i> Biblical scholars believe about the early Christian era &#8212; and it&#8217;s not what Pastor Bubba is telling you.<\/p>\n<p>As a contemporary analogy of what happened at the dawn of Christianity, imagine that the <i>Breitbart<\/i> and <i>World Net Daily<\/i> and <i>Renew America<\/i> crowds succeeded in controlling the historical narrative about the early 21<sup>st<\/sup>-Century; the result would be no more trustworthy than the New Testament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No other document is more central to history.
