It\u2019s tempting for those of us who interpret politics for a living to overstate the importance of competing philosophies. We shouldn&#8217;t forget the enduring role of sheer vanity.<\/p>\n<p>That brings us to Monday\u2019s New York Times article about Bill White and his husband, Bryan Eure, headlined \u201cHow a Liberal Couple Became Two of N.Y.\u2019s Biggest Trump Supporters.\u201d The answer: ego. A former big-ticket Democratic fund-raiser, White went straight from Hillary Clinton\u2019s election night party to Donald Trump\u2019s when he realized which way the wind was blowing.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/26\/opinion\/trump-supporters-bill-white-bryan-eure.html?action=click&#038;module=Opinion&#038;pgtype=Homepage\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Goldberg<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those of us who are comfortable with ideas, and trained to think from principled abstractions, are prone to forget this: some people are merely things that eat, and they go where the food is best.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reading Baron\u2019s story helped me realize emotionally something I knew intellectually.
