I grew up in the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SBC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SBC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PaigePatterson?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PaigePatterson<\/a> bubble.  I clearly remember the air of fear around him. I never ever thought I would see the day. Is it just PR or actual progress though? The viciousness of the fight for the SBC is well-documented; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/03\/11\/us\/baptists-dismiss-seminary-head-in-surprise-move.html\" target=\"_blank\">dismissal of Russell Dilday<\/a> as president of Southwestern Seminary in 1994 is instructive:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The request that the 63-year-old president retire came as a surprise at the end of a contentious three-day board meeting, but <SPAN style=\"BACKGROUND-COLOR: #a8f2f5\">it was apparently planned. Within minutes of the vote, the locks on his office were changed<\/span>, Dr. Dilday said.<\/p>\n<p>In a telephone interview from his home near the seminary&#8217;s 200-acre campus, Dr. Dilday said he was <SPAN style=\"BACKGROUND-COLOR: #a8f2f5\">caught off guard<\/span> because the <SPAN style=\"BACKGROUND-COLOR: #a8f2f5\">board&#8217;s executive committee had given him a glowing appraisal one day earlier<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They smiled in his face while they were unsheathing the knife &#8212; and he was only one of dozens who were treated with similar shabbiness.  Contemporary Southern Baptists like to traffic the half-truth that &#8220;nobody was fired&#8221; during the Resurgence, a literal truth intended to deceive; unsuspecting seminary faculty, and seminary presidents, were given no-nonsense notice that a failure to resign immediately would result in firing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#39;m stunned.
