Tomorrow will be the 50-somethingth Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk, the one day a year when pedestrians are permitted onto the 6-mile long span between Michigan’s upper– and lower peninsulas.<\/p>\n
Ordinarily, the north– or south-bound lane is closed, and pedestrians can walk across the bridge. I’ve never done it, but since the span is about 200-feet above the straits, I’m sure the view is spectacular.<\/p>\n
This year, acknowledging the increasing popularity of using a car to mow down pedestrians, the Michigan State Police and the Department of Homeland Security insisted that all<\/i> traffic had to be banned during the walk. So you can still walk, and earn a certificate attesting to the fact that you walked across the bridge, but there will be no automobile traffic because domestic or international terrorists might make a target of you.<\/p>\n
