We were amazed (and disheartened) by how many downtown churches there were \u2014 mainly Baptist \u2014 and the seemingly ubiquitous  homeless and panhandlers. I told Polly, \u201clook at all these big, fancy, rich churches, yet hungry, out-of-work, homeless people abound.
