{"id":2483,"date":"2015-10-21T15:19:37","date_gmt":"2015-10-21T19:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=2483"},"modified":"2015-10-21T15:19:37","modified_gmt":"2015-10-21T19:19:37","slug":"even-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=2483","title":{"rendered":"Even Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The home of the Catholic Church for 2000-years is set to authorize <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20151019\/gay-unions-italy-set-to-spurn-church\" target=\"_blank\">same-sex marriage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p> The Church\u2019s influence on Italian politics has managed to derail attempts by previous administrations to get the law enacted, and while it still plays a strong role in Italy, its influence over the gay rights debate seems to be diminishing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not like 30 years ago,\u201d Paolo Segatti, a political sociology professor at the University of Milan, told The Local.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are fewer practising Catholics in Italy&#8230;this decline has been happening for some time. The Church\u2019s influence is now very small, so I don\u2019t think it will be able to block this.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is good, on two fronts.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Excepting on suspicion of child abuse, no state anywhere has a licit interest in the sex lives of its citizens.<\/p>\n<li>\n<p>It points toward the declining influence of religious ignorance.<\/ol>\n<p>So, good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The home of the Catholic Church for 2000-years is set to authorize same-sex marriage.
