{"id":1635,"date":"2015-07-10T13:09:20","date_gmt":"2015-07-10T17:09:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=1635"},"modified":"2015-07-10T15:53:20","modified_gmt":"2015-07-10T19:53:20","slug":"the-confederate-battle-flag-comes-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=1635","title":{"rendered":"The Confederate battle-flag comes down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As everybody in the universe must know by now, the Confederate battle-flag which has flown in front of the South Carolina statehouse for more than half-a-century has been lowered &#8212; possibly for the last time.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the video and notice the unseemly pomp, and the careful folding once lowered, on behalf of a symbol that warrants only disdain from decent adults.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/btJODF-Z1oA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=1484\" target=\"_blank\">My idea was better<\/a>: It should have remained right where it was, and the memorial should have been retrofitted to an observance of a shameful episode in the state&#8217;s history, as has been done with the now-abandoned Nazi concentration camps throughout Europe.  Merely removing the flag from public view does nothing to change the underlying culture; that requires frank, unambiguous moral condemnation from <i>bona fide<\/i> leaders &#8212; and this isn&#8217;t it.
