{"id":13336,"date":"2021-06-25T12:23:14","date_gmt":"2021-06-25T16:23:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=13336"},"modified":"2021-06-25T12:23:14","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T16:23:14","slug":"every-civil-engineers-nightmare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=13336","title":{"rendered":"Every civil engineer&#8217;s nightmare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Probably everybody has by now watched the video of that Florida condo collapse near Miami.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KuldroR6_Zg\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>For civil engineers, watching such videos is always painful and accompanied by the thought, &#8220;Thank God that wasn&#8217;t one of <i>my<\/i> projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The first report that I heard of the disaster was accompanied by speculation by some newscaster that the cause was some sort of soil\/foundation failure.  Since my specialty is soil mechanics and I spent most of my engineering career working on foundation designs, including 7-years in central Florida, I watched with especially keen interest.<\/p>\n<p>There might be some sort of shallow excavation on one side of the building; the available video doesn&#8217;t make that clear.
