If the GOP doesn\u2019t take a stand, the chaos of the past few months, and the past four years, could quickly return. The future of our party and our country depends on confronting what happened \u2014 so it doesn\u2019t happen again.<\/p>\n<p>The immediate cause for Trump\u2019s impeachment was Jan. 6. But the president\u2019s rally and resulting riot on Capitol Hill didn\u2019t come out of nowhere. They were the result of four-plus years of anger, outrage and outright lies. Perhaps the most dangerous lie \u2014 or at least the most recent \u2014 was that the election was stolen. Of course it wasn\u2019t, but a huge number of Republican leaders encouraged the belief that it was. Every time that lie was repeated, the riots of Jan. 6 became more likely.<\/p>\n<p>Even now, many Republicans refuse to admit what happened.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/02\/08\/adam-kinzinger-trump-impeachment-senate-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rep. Adam Kinzinger<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Everybody who pays attention <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=12956\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">knew that there would be violence<\/a> January 6<sup>th<\/sup> &#8212; <i>everybody but the president?<\/i>, I mean?<\/p>\n<p>It is simply not believable that Trump didn&#8217;t intend what happened; he really did resort to violence in an attempt to hold the presidency &#8212; and he must be convicted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a matter of accountability.
