{"id":10082,"date":"2019-04-09T12:25:35","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T16:25:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=10082"},"modified":"2019-04-09T12:25:35","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T16:25:35","slug":"racism-and-the-sbc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=10082","title":{"rendered":"Racism and the SBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sbcvoices.com\/five-questions-i-respectfully-ask-five-southern-baptist-convention-entities-to-answer\/?utm_source=feedburner&#038;utm_medium=feed&#038;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+SbcVoices+%28SBC+Voices%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dwight McKissic<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobfelton.com\/?p=10059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still annoyed<\/a> that the Southern Baptist Convention is unable to find suitable minorities for upper-level positions within the denomination.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Five Entities: Southern Baptist Executive Committee (EC), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS), International Mission Board (IMB), New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS), and Lifeway.<\/p>\n<p>There are five questions that I plan to forward to five SBC entities (listed above), who have hired, or will be hiring a President for each entity, in the months ahead. If I get actual, specific answers to these questions &#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The questions ask for hard numbers: How many minority applicants, how many were short-listed, <i>et cetera, et cetera<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I have mixed feelings about this.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>I don&#8217;t blame McKissic for being unhappy with the denomination&#8217;s foot-dragging on ending its ugly history of racism, and I think that at least some of the SBC leadership sincerely wants a more inclusive environment.<\/p>\n<p>But Ma and Pa Kettle out in the pews are never going to welcome minorities, especially here in the south &#8212; and that&#8217;s the way that is.  These are Trump supporters who are ready to crash the entire country because they know they&#8217;ve lost the culture wars, and they think blacks and browns and college-educated women already have too much influence.<\/p>\n<li>\n<p>I dislike head-counts because they inevitably, unavoidably, conduce to quotas and corresponding injustices.<\/ul>\n<p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dwight McKissic is still annoyed that the Southern Baptist Convention is unable to find suitable minorities for upper-level positions within the denomination.
