37-minutes

Thirty-seven minutes is all a Kansas jury needed to convict Scott Roeder of murdering Dr. George Tiller.

The jury deliberated for just 37 minutes before finding Scott Roeder, 51, of Kansas City, Mo., guilty of premeditated, first-degree murder for putting a gun to the forehead of Dr. George Tiller on May 31 and pulling the trigger.

Roeder admitted the shooting; he went so far as to admit that he had purchased the gun with the intention of killing Tiller, that he practiced the gun’s use, that he acquainted himself with Tiller’s habits.

His defense consisted, in its entirety, of the claim that he was acting in defense of unborn babies, that his murder of Tiller was morally justified; as we all know, there are lots of loonies on the evangelical right who agree with that — but the swift decision of a conservative-Kansas jury tells us how out-of-step with reality and the mainstream those people really are.

That’s a good thing to know, and gratifying, but it can only make the crazies even crazier. Look out. As the magical metaphysics of the Wizard In The Sky are displaced by the metaphysics of science, they are going to get more frantic with each passing day.
