Steve Schmidt, the manager of John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, credited Sarah Palin with helping the GOP ticket, saying McCain’s loss would have been greater had she not been the VP nominee.
Schmidt conceded that had Palin not been on the ticket, “our margin of defeat would’ve been greater than it would’ve been otherwise.”
I suppose he might be right, but I’m skeptical. I predicted by March, 2008 when folk were wondering where John McCain’s campaign had gone, and saying Hillary Clinton was inevitable that the race would be between Barack Obama and John McCain, and I had every intention of voting for John McCain.
It was McCain’s choice of Daffy Duck as his running mate that sent me to the Libertarian ticket. In fact, within an hour of Palin’s selection I sent an e-mail conceding the election to a friend that I knew was rooting for Obama.
If it’s actually true that Palin helped the ticket, then the Republican Party is even more debauched and pathetic than I had supposed.

The same story contains a remark by Sarah Palin that her selection by John McCain was the operation of “God’s plan.”
Well … I dunno about that, either. Seems to me that, able to think the whole big universe into existence, He could have installed Barack Obama in the White House by some more direct means than a convoluted scheme to discredit John McCain by arranging to have his picture taken with a fantastic idiot.
Or maybe Palin’s vanity exceeds her ignorance. I can believe that.
