Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, and then comes some overdue visiting with family till the New Year. There will be no more Commotion here, anyway till Tuesday, January 5th. Once returned, there will be some permanent changes.
There is that book I want to finish. But a book, at least a book of Finale!‘s sort, is basically a very long, well-informed essay, and that requires an entirely different type of writing than the conversational, bite-size, USA Today-style that prevails in blogdom.
A blogger tends to assume, I think, that his readers know “where he’s coming from,” that there is a sort of shared history which makes it unnecessary to fully develop the sweep of an idea or point of view. That’s fatal in other forms, though, and something I need to constantly stop to remind myself. Blogging makes the writing lazy, I’m saying.
So the book will have pride of place for a while, and Civil Commotion will get my attention when it gets it. What you do see here will be more newspaper column-like, less frequent but more thorough in the presentation of a single idea.
Have a nice Christmas, y’all.
