The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, to whom both sexual intercourse and marriage are forbidden, assembled today in Baltimore to discuss and vote on adoption of a pastoral letter entitled “Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan.”
From this, we know that humility is not taken seriously amongst the higher ranks of the Pious.
It begins, as these things invariably do, with a reminder that we is all no damn good.
Original Sin introduced evil and disorder into the world. As a consequence of the break with God, this first sin ruptured the original communion between man and woman.
The unhappy incident with that bad piece of fruit, that is, is a real event that actually happened on a bad day, like the crash of the Hindenburg.
So we’re good to say right off the bat that not only are these guys frauds launched into a topic about which they are resolutely and purposely ignorant, they also are embarrassing idiots.
But never mind. It gets better.
We note a disturbing trend today to view marriage as a mostly private matter, an individualistic project not related to the common good but oriented mostly to achieving personal satisfaction.
Has it until recently been the case that Catholics got married for “the common good” and without regard for “achieving personal satisfaction?” I guess so, since it’s a disturbing new trend.
And on and on, roughly 40-pages of urgings to keep the church at the center of your married life, corporately if possible but alone if it turns out you inadvertently married one of Satan’s impious li’l helpers, et cetera, et cetera.
It’s a self-serving letter based on unserious premises, by ignoramuses. Really, I marvel that anybody anywhere takes them seriously.
