    Court documents indicate that Jane Vaughn, who managed the scrip program for St. Matthew Catholic School in Cedar Rapids, approached the parish priest and told him she believed there was about $60,000 missing from the program. The records indicate that the 57-year-old Vaughn also told the priest she had taken some of the gift cards for her personal use.

  • North Carolina

    A 46-year-old pastor from Leland has been charged with felony sex crimes against a child, officials said.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested James T. Johnson of Leland on Tuesday, according to a detective with the office. Johnson is the pastor of The Olive Branch church on Mt. Misery Road in Leland.

    A former employee is suing the pastor of a Los Angeles County church, claiming he sexually abused her over a period of years.

    Rev. Brenda Lamothe says in a complaint filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court that Rev. John J. Hunter of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church repeatedly demanded sex as part of “God’s will.”

    A judge today denied a request from a convicted former priest to seal records and keep private most of the court proceedings on whether he should be committed under a state statute for sex offenders.

    Under the Sexually Violent Persons Commitment Act, the Illinois attorney general and the Cook County state’s attorney filed a joint petition in September to have Daniel McCormack confined to a state treatment facility.

    A priest and onetime teacher at Notre Dame Elementary in East Stroudsburg accused of having child pornography on his computer will be headed to court after he waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday.

  • Ohio

    Dale Giffin, formerly of the Zion Lutheran Church on Canfield Road, will spend the next 30 days under house arrest and 2 years on probation after pleading “guilty” to misdemeanor assault charges.

  • Maryland

    The daughter of a prominent minister in Prince George’s County who stole $95,000 in cash from him was sentenced yesterday to 15 weekends in jail after pleading guilty to a theft charge, prosecutors said.

  • New York

    A former pastor has been arrested twice for stealing from his church and from the Tioga County Habitat for Humanity.

    27-year-old David Heckman Jr. of Binghamton was arrested for stealing $1,500 from The First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newark Valley.

  • Texas

    One of the leaders of a polygamist sect was convicted Thursday night of sexually assaulting an under-age girl whom the church elders had assigned to him as one of his nine wives.

    A jury of seven men and five women deliberated 2 hours 20 minutes before returning a verdict of guilty in the first trial of a dozen members of the Yearning for Zion Ranch just outside this rural hamlet in West Texas.

  • Texas

    The Houston County’s Sheriff’s Office chaplain reportedly confessed to Sheriff Andy Hughes that he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old Dothan girl.

    Hughes said Friday that detectives arrested Curtis Otha Grant, 53, of A.J. Register Road, and charged him with a single felony count of second-degree rape, five felony counts of second-degree sodomy and five felony counts of enticing a child for immoral purposes.
