Elizabeth Prophet, head of Church Universal and Triumphant and a direct communicant with the Ascended Masters — which roll-call included Buddha, Jesus, and the head of something called the Cosmic Secret Service — has died. She was 70.
Elizabeth Prophet’s flock called her Mother, Guru Ma, Mother of the Flame and the Vicar of Christ – and some of them viewed her as the only “messenger” of the Church Universal and Triumphant, the one person on Earth who could take “dictations” from the Ascended Masters. Her critics dismissed her as a power-hungry charlatan.
In the late 1980s Elizabeth Prophet issued warnings of an impending nuclear strike by the Soviet Union against the United States. More than 2,000 of her followers left their homes and gathered at the church’s compound in Montana, near the Yellowstone National Park. They began stockpiling an arsenal of assault rifles and armoured vehicles, as well as a supply of food and clothing, in underground bomb shelters.
When nothing happened, they began returning home. They agreed not to store weapons in return for a reinstatement of the church’s tax-exempt status, which had been revoked in 1987.
I guess there’s nothing so crazy that you can’t make a good living peddling it to somebody.
