The sickness on the Right

Is it, or should it be, controversial that the president wants to encourage school children to study hard, listen to their teachers, and get a good education? Amongst the loonies on the Right it is controversial and more: It is evidence of a grand design aimed at subverting parental rights, undermining the Republic, and installing Satan as Grand Vizier.

Here is a woman who is in tears at the prospect of the president addressing her children.

The great irony, of course, is that this president is the exemplar for the importance of education and, with scarcely 30% of the nation’s black children raised in 2-parent homes, he is the right man to deliver the message. If the Right had anything on offer but malice they would be grateful that, unlike the past half-dozen presidents, this one takes education seriously, recognizes that the United States is falling behind the rest of the world, and means to do something about it.
