Yes, Obama professed Jesus to be his savior during the Saddleback forum, but one has to wonder whether he sees this salvation as exclusively Christian. A few years ago, while a member of Wright’s church, he told a Sun-Times religion reporter that there were “many paths to the same place.”
This is interesting only because of the break it represents with an advance in theological and philosophical thinking first championed by the Baptists, the Priesthood of the Believer. Baptists once believed that the truth of the gospel message was accessible to all men with prayerful reflection inviting the guidance of the Holy Spirit. They understood that belief is in the mind of the believer, and accepted the possibility of different understandings.
