I should reprise a point I make often, but probably not often enough. I am well aware that most of the folk who call themselves Christians shudder when they see things like this. They should, and it speaks well of them that they do.
But then they go on to say something like, “Well, no real Christian would hold a sign like that. Don’t blame Christianity, it’s just one screwed-up person who has misunderstood.”
No. This is where Christianity invariably does, and must, end-up when it is taken seriously. The whole of Christian thought relies on Original Sin, the infantile rant of a frustrated child: “Everybody is rotten and deserves to die.” The whole crazy, rickety thing rests on malice.
As Mark Twain once wrote, imagining a letter written by Satan to his fellow angels about earth and the people who live there: “They are better than their Bible.”
I probably shouldn’t presume to edit Twain, but it would have been smart of him to add something like, “most of ‘em.”
