Rural v. urban

As French President Francois Hollande plans to introduce same-sex marriage, the opposition is exhibiting a familiar pattern:

The opposition to President Francois Hollande’s plan has underscored divisions among the secular-but-Catholic French, especially more traditional rural areas versus urban enclaves. But while polls show the majority of French still support legalizing gay marriage, that backing gets more lukewarm when children come into play.

Something similar was seen when North Carolina voted to add a prohibition against same-sex marriage to its state constitution; the cities voted against the measure, but it passed decisively with support from the boonies.
