The biggest news from yesterday was that Schaap had confessed the sexual relationship and apparently admitted that the girl was 16 when it started: Fired Pastor Confesses to Affair With Teen
Don’t overlook this tidbit:
The only news since yesterday that I have picked up is that Jack Schaap’s secretary, an adult, married woman with children, had a role in driving the victim places (including some pretty distant places), where the 17 year old victim would meet Schaap. It’s hard for me to fathom how an adult woman could take a mere girl off on meetings like this, many of them at night, without knowing or at least suspecting what was going on.
The unhappy truth, I think, is that religiosity is for some people an escape from adulthood. You know — just do as you’re told, and Jesus will take care of everything. Whether explicitly or implicitly, that’s the subtext of nearly every sermon ever preached in the history of Christendom, and this kind of reckless stupidity is the fruit.
