‘Nones’ continue to increase

A new PEW study finds that those who identify with no religious faith has increased to 19%.

Unbelief is on the uptick. People who check “None” for their religious affiliation are now nearly one in five Americans (19%), the highest ever documented, according to the Pew Center for the People and the Press.

The rapid rise of Nones — including atheists, agnostics and those who say they believe “nothing in particular” — defies the usually glacial rate of change in spiritual identity.

I think there are probably two aspects to this:

  1. Science and widespread public education have undone the myths.

  2. Even if you’re a nitwit who believes in talking snakes, who with a shred of ordinary decency wants to be identified with the modern evangelical right?
