Post-convention reflections

The Wartburg Watch isn’t as impressed as the SBC leadership by the mighty works undertaken in New Orleans.

Another gathering of SBC leaders and messengers has come and gone, and I am even more confused about the Southern Baptist Convention’s trajectory. Why? Here are three issues that deeply concern me as a Southern Baptist – or is that Great Commission Baptist?

Name changes are the near-infallible sign of an enterprise that is decadent, is failing, and wants a cheap facelift. It rarely helps because there is no corresponding change in the underlying institutional culture that has wrecked the brand, and it is unlikely to help revive the SBC, either. At best, it will give their salesmen a few short minutes of patter before they have to acknowledge their Southern Baptist identity and the eye-rolling begins.
